Background Info - ERP Systems

Enterprise Management Systems are used by most manufacturing, and distribution companies. They manage a centralized database of all operational data, and is typically used by the company's entire "back office" functions:

  • Customer Service and Order Entry
  • Purchasing
  • Inventory
  • Manufacturing
  • Accounting
  • Engineering
  • Estimating

For a list of applications that are typically available with ERP Systems, see Typical ERP Applications

Early generations of ERP Systems, used by manufacturing companies, were called Material Requirements Planning (MRP) products, or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) products, by the vendors that offered them. Many vendors that offer the current generation of ERP Systems have changed the general name of their offerings to Supply Chain Management products.

ERP Systems used by distribution companies are typically referred to as Distribution Management Software (DMS) products, or Warehouse Management Software (WMS) products.
